What is Web Design in Flash (What is Flash)?
Flash is a graphic, audio & scripting technology
that can allow for very animated & exciting sites.
The sites FreeRange
Software, Doug
The Slug, The
High Priestess, TerraBoard & Reese
Designs were all done entirely in Flash. This
allows for wonderful flexibility and scalability
of the sites. Also Flash supports streaming of its
graphical & audio content so that the whole site
does not have to be downloaded before the client
can start enjoying it.
Graphically Flash supports vector graphics natively
which are resolution independent & can look
great at any monitor resolution & also when
printed. Vector graphics are those images that
are typically produced by graphics programs such
as Macromedia FreeHand ™, Adobe Illustrator ™ & Corel
Draw ™. Flash also supports the use of bitmap
graphics such as the GIF & JPEG images used
on many sites.
Audio in Flash can be delivered via ADPCM or MP3
audio compression.
Video in Flash MX and greater is now supported
via it's own internal streaming video codec to
seamlessly intergrate the size and quality of
streaming video formats such as QuickTime and
Windows Media Player with the control of Flash.
Scripting in Flash (especially Flash 5+) is very
advanced & can be used in conjunction with
other scripting languages including JavaScript,
VBScript & server side CGI implementations.
The one problem Flash sites suffer from is tracking
usage. HTML pages are logged by the web server.
But there is no way for the web server to log
pages internal to a Flash movie. But I have a
system that uses PHP server-side scripting & MySQL
database to take care of this. Please view my
example here.
This system is still being developed for esthetics & usability.
Though it is quite useful now & can be custom
designed if so desired.
